While he may still hiss when he’s frightened, he has started to let staff gently touch him with a glove—an incredible step forward for this sweet boy who’s trying so hard to trust.
Salem is FIV-positive (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), a condition that affects a cat’s immune system and makes it a bit harder for him to fight off infections. But don’t let that discourage you—FIV+ cats can live long, healthy, happy lives with proper care and a calm indoor environment. FIV is not contagious to people or other animals, and is typically only transmitted to other cats through deep bite wounds, which are rare among friendly, neutered cats.
Because of his FIV status, Salem must be kept indoors and should either be the only cat in the home or live with other FIV+ cats.
